PROBLEMS:

  • Enthusiastic gardener desired a place in which to relax, entertain, and interact with the lush garden.
  • Existing single-glazed greenhouse was structurally unsound and unsafe. It covered a bedroom window.
  • Access to the yard was from the sides of the house.
  • Main floor alteration for access to yard would disrupt one of two existing bedrooms.
  • Garden was crowded with overgrown shrubs and trees, and dominated by rectangular raised beds.

SOLUTIONS:

  • A new Garden Pavilion, accessed by wide processional stairs from improved basement Family Room, is freestanding on 3-1/2 sides, allowing maximum window space, and a feeling of separation from daily life.
  • Insulated glass garage door enables direct connection to outside.
  • Stamped, tinted, radiant-heated concrete floor flows uninterrupted from Garden Pavilion to enlarged patio.
  • Copper-finished metal roof makes the Garden Pavilion a special occasion structure.
  • Selective removal of trees and shrubs, along with “legging up” of trees increases perceived size of the garden.
  • A curving pathway, gently mounded beds and seating areas of varying character and sun exposure allow kinetic experience of the garden.

Before, the garden was crowded and overgrown.
Rectangular raised beds dominated the open space
and regulated movement." An existing attached
glass greenhouse was dangerous.

After, fewer shrubs and trees create openness. Paths and beds flow outward from the Pavilion and patio.
